Mazatlan Destination Guide
Mazatlan, the Pacific Pearl, is rapidly becoming one of Mexico's hottest tourist destinations. Home to the largest shrimping fleet in Mexico, that sail out of its commercial port, it's a great destination for anyone who has a passion for sport fishing. Mazatlan is located on a headland that separates the harbor from the many tourist areas and even though it has seen a boom in tourism Mazatlan still holds on to the small town atmosphere. Year round the climate is fantastic and the waters warm. The Riu Emerald Bay is the newest edition to the Riu chain of hotels in Mexico.
Nomadic tribes were the first people to roam the area and according to findings they traded with the Aztec tribes, in fact it was the Aztecs that originally named the area Mazatl, meaning the area of deer. It wasn't until the Spanish arrived that the port was constructed, from where trade ships set sail to Asia. The gold fever in the Californias attracted French and German immigrants who came looking to get rich quick! It really wasn't until the 1960's the tourism industry began to grow in Mazatlan.
In reality Mazatlan is a little different to some of the other tourist destinations in Mexico, because it has a long illustrious history and it is also a town very concerned about preserving its culture and image. It really is an excellent combination of nature, a beautifully preserved town center, stunning beaches, luxury hotels, like the Riu Emerald Bay, and friendly people, giving Mazatlan a very balanced feel.

Mazatlan's townsfolk are quite a lucky crowd really. They have stunning views, gorgeous architecture and a wealth of cultural events as well.
